Award Recipients For 2002

The "Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award" was established in 1994 by Howard & Connie Clery to honor schools and individuals that have done extraordinary things to make college and university students safer.

California State University System

The implementation of sweeping reform of the California State University System’s alcohol policy sets a courageous example for colleges across the country struggling to control alcohol abuse among students. Enlisting the cooperation of state agencies to fight alcohol abuses on and off university campuses sets an admirable precedent!

In addition, they have just completed production of a Clery Act training video, which helps to clarify the fine points of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act for California State University Security personnel. This video will be helpful to colleges and universities nationwide.

One In Four Walk Across America

One In Four
“The Four” pictured left to right: Steve McAllister, Michael Charbonneau, Pat Hanlin, Joe McCarthy
These four young men’s walk across America, and public speaking activities, have, by attracting national media attention, raised the public’s consciousness about the problems of sexual assault on our college campuses and throughout society. Their message, which asks people, and especially men, to examine themselves and their attitudes about sexual assault, gets at the heart of the issue – shining a light on the misconceptions about this vastly underreported crime.

We commend you for trying to influence the State Legislature of Michigan to make rape kits available to victims of rape, free of charge, so that the collection of forensic evidence can be accomplished for this crime the same as for any other violent crime in the state of Michigan.
