Re: Fed Up Higher Education Technical Amendments of 2002 (H.R.4866)
Dear Chairman Boehner:
We have reviewed the Fed Up Higher Education Technical Amendments of 2002 (H.R.4866) and wanted to let you know that we have no objection to the bills clerical amendment to Section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act (HEA). This subsection is known as the Jeanne Clery Act in memory of my sister who was murdered on campus and requires colleges to disclose campus crime statistics to their students.
Concerns remain thought that these important student safety provisions may be inadvertently weakened if there are any further changes made to them as a part of the Fed Up initiative. Therefore we respectfully ask that the Education & The Workforce Committee not consider any further amendments to the Clery Act during your markup of H.R.4866 on Wednesday.
As your Committee, however, considers possible future changes to the Higher Education Act as a part of the reauthorization process we look forward to working with you to improve the Clery Act. Among the chief needed improvements is the establishment of an office within the U.S. Department of Education to properly implement the Clery Act.
Thank you for your attention to our concerns. Should you have any questions please dont hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Howard K. Clery, III
