Parental Notification Information Brochure

As the parent or guardian of a dependent, college-age student, YOU are the best defense for assuring their college years will be a safe and productive experience.

The combination of naiveté and independence makes college students, especially freshman, easy targets for victimization.

Youthful exuberance and the feeling of immortality often can result in poor judgment, where the outcome can impact a lifetime.

Unfortunately, our nation's college campuses are not excluded from the problems of alcohol, drugs, crime and violence.

95% of all student-on-student violent crimes on college campuses is alcohol and/or drug related.

Federal law recognizes Parents' Rights to be notified if their child is involved in risky or illegal behavior such as underage drinking, public drunkenness, drugs or criminal activity.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of students' academic and financial records from public scrutiny, not behaviors that are illegal or compromise the public safety of themselves or others.

Knowing your son or daughter has engaged in risky behaviors or illegal activities may be embarrassing for both your and your child. Embarrassment eventually evaporates. A child whose poor judgment results in an injury, disability, imprisonment-or death-leaves far more traumatic scars than embarrassment.

There are situations that can be avoided, rectified and improved upon by something as simple as a phone call from a college administrator. It may be the one phone call that can save your child's life.

Please let college administrators know you are exercising your parental rights in requesting to be kept informed of issues affecting your child's health and well being.

We've posted (see the menu to the left) a form parents can use to request this important information from their child's school and that their student can sign to allow their parents to get this information (although not necessary under federal law for dependent students, it may be required under state law). You can preview the form before you print it out.
