Outside The Classroom and Security On Campus Partner to Deliver Online Alcohol Education to Concerned Parents

Boston, MA-Outside The Classroom, Inc, the leading provider of online health education courses for colleges and universities, and Security On Campus, Inc., a non-profit organization devoted to creating safer campus environments, announced today they will work together to advance their shared mission to reduce high-risk drinking. This cooperative endeavor brings both organizations a step closer to helping prevent America’s number one drug problem: alcohol abuse.

Catherine Bath & Brandon BusteedThrough this partnership, Security On Campus will offer Outside The Classroom’s online alcohol education program, AlcoholEduTM, to concerned parents through their web site www.campussafety.org. Until now, AlcoholEdu was only available to colleges and universities. It is the only course of its kind available to the public, and is the first commercial product ever endorsed by Security On Campus.

“Security On Campus has been a tireless supporter of important legislation, and they have an impressive track record for promoting safer campuses. Over the years, parents and communities have come to rely on them as a critical resource, and we’re delighted that our partnership will enable us to deliver an online prevention program to their constituents. The objective is simple; we’re going to educate people about alcohol and ultimately save more lives,” said Brandon Busteed, founder of Outside The Classroom.

Busteed, an alumnus of Duke University, where he was an active student leader on the issue of alcohol, left his first job after college to start Outside The Classroom. The catalyst for Busteed’s decision was news that a fellow Duke student, Raheem Bath, had died of alcohol-related causes. A year after the tragedy, and upon hearing of Outside The Classroom’s success in teaching college students about alcohol, the mother of the victim, Catherine Bath, contacted Busteed. Bath, who is now the Program Director at Security On Campus, did not know at the time that Busteed was a Duke graduate or that her son’s death was part of the impetus behind his efforts to stop dangerous drinking. Little did they realize their individual efforts would one day bring together powerful programmatic ideas.

“Outside The Classroom has developed the first effective program for alcohol education, and they’ve done it using the most wide-reaching tool available: the Internet. We now have an obligation to deliver alcohol prevention to every home and classroom in America. And, we’re as close as your computer,” said S. Daniel Carter, Senior Vice President, Security On Campus, Inc.

According to independent analysis of survey data from AlcoholEdu’s built-in assessment tools, students who complete the course demonstrate healthier knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to alcohol. In an effort to remediate their most rampant public health issue on campus, universities nationwide are taking a preventive stance on alcohol by requiring AlcoholEdu’s non-opinionated, science-based course for their entire first-year classes. Greek organizations and athletic departments have also adopted AlcoholEdu to promote safe and responsible decision-making about alcohol.
