Unholy Alliance Perpetuates Campus Binge Drinking
King of Prussia, PA-Last week the U.S. Department of Education released a report revealing that there were 134,779 serious alcohol violations on college campuses in 1999. Howard Clery, the co-founder of Security On Campus, Inc., responded with the following statement today:
An Unholy Alliance of cowardly college administrators, and greedy alcohol distributors perpetuates binge drinking on campus.
Administrators fearful of the "soft costs" of bad press, as confirmed by a report written by U.S. Senator Joseph Biden, hide the true extent of campus binge drinking. North Carolina Central University has even asked students to not say anything to the press that might result in a "negative" story.
Their lobby group the American Council on Education recommends that schools only adopt minimal standards to comply with federal requirements against binge drinking so as to limit their own liability if they fail to "enforce them effectively."
As apologists for the schools the U.S. Department of Education doesnt even bother to see if these programs are working and prefers to focus on "social norming."
Instead weve got to ensure that parents are involved, and that there is a Zero Tolerance for campus Binge Drinking. Weve seen the lives of too many of our brilliant young people destroyed by Binge Drinking and it must be stopped.
