Congressional Victim's Rights Caucus Seeks Input From Victim Assistance Field

Connie CleryWashington, DC-Security On Campus, Inc. (SOC) and about a dozen other victims' rights groups on Wednesday participated in the first meeting of the Congressional Victim's Rights Caucus Advisory Group at the Capitol. The advisory group was founded to help the Caucus "stay in close touch with America's victim assistance field." It includes MADD, The National Center for Victims of Crime, and RAINN (the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network) among others. The meeting was led by Caucus Co-Chairs U.S. Representatives Ted Poe (R-TX), Jim Costa (D-CA), and Katherine Harris (R-FL).

Connie Clery (pictured right with Congressmen Poe and Costa), who co-founded SOC with her husband Howard after their daughter Jeanne was murdered at Lehigh University in 1986, represented SOC on the panel along with SOC Senior Vice President S. Daniel Carter. Issues discussed included the proposed recession of the Crime Vicitms' Fund balance (the Caucus has taken the lead in Congress in protecting this important resource for victim assistance), Violence Against Women Act grant funding, the Children's Safety Act, and increasing input to the Caucus from the field.

SOC is honored to have been asked to participate on this important panel and wants to make sure that the voices of campus community victim assistance providers are heard by the Caucus. If you have ideas or concerns that you would like for us to bring to the attention of the Caucus at the next advisory group meeting or before please e-mail them to Carter at sdcarter@securityoncampus.org.
