Congress Passes "STOP Act"

Capitol DomeWashington, DC-The U.S. House of Representatives gave final approval to the "Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act" or "STOP Act" (H.R. 864) on Thursday, following recent approval by the U.S. Senate. The bill which is designed to establish a more comprehensive national approach to the prevention of underage drinking is expected to be signed into law by the President.

Among the provisions in the bill is a new grant program aimed at preventing underage and "binge drinking" by students at institutions of higher education. The program, to be administered by the U.S. Department of Education, would make up to five million dollars available annually for the enhancement or creation of statewide coalitions targeting student drinking.
