NAICU States Support For The Jeanne Clery Act

Washington, DC-The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities last week clarified their position on the Jeanne Clery Act, stating in a letter to Congressional leaders that they "have never, and are not now, calling for this law to be weakened or eliminated." The letter came in response to concerns raised by Connie & Howard Clery, Jeanne's parents and the co-founders of Security On Campus, Inc., that NAICU was calling for the possible elimination of a number of federal consumer information provisions that include the Clery Act's campus crime reporting requirements.

An examination of some of the Clery Act's provisions remains likely however. "We are asking that its reporting provisions be examined to make campus crime information more useful to students and their families," wrote David Warren the President of NAICU. Also, a group of more than 40 higher education associations led by the American Council on Education and including NAICU last week issued a report calling for "simplified reporting requirements" within the Clery Act.
