Drug And Alcohol Arrests Increased On Campuses In 2001 According To Chronicle Of Higher Education Analysis

The amount of drug and alcohol arrests on college campuses increased in 2001 according to a Chronicle of Higher Education analysis of data submitted to the U.S. Department of Education under the Jeanne Clery Act. In a report published in the May 16th issue, the Chronicle reports that drug arrests increased 5.5 percent in 2001 from 11,420 the previous year to 12,048, and liquor arrests increased 4.7 percent in 2001 from 26,155 to 27,386.

The analysis, including data from 4,711 two and four year degree granting schools, also reported a nearly 10 percent increase in reported forcible sex offenses from 1,947 to 2,125. More...


Tennessee Governor Signs Legislation Opening More Campus Crime Records

Nashville, Tenn.-More campus crime information will be available from Tennessee's public colleges and universities beginning this fall under legislation (Public Chapter 105, Acts of 2003) signed into law last week by Governor Phil Bredesen (D). Schools will now be required to publicly release the names of any students disciplined for committing a violent crime, or sex offense.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Harry Brooks (R-Knoxville) and Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville), will also allow violent crime victims to be told the results of disciplinary proceedings against their alleged assailants regardless of the outcome, make it clear that information about registered sex offenders on campus can be disclosed, and allow parents of students who are under 21 to be told if their child is disciplined for an alcohol or drug violation.
