2002 College & University Clery Act Campus Crime Statistics Released

Crime statistics from more than 6,000 colleges, universities, and other postsecondary schools for calendar year 2002 have been released by the U.S. Department of Education and are now available on the Security On Campus, Inc. web site http://www.securityoncampus.org/. These statistics, reported under the federal Jeanne Clery Act, include crimes reported to campus police, local police, as well as campus officials, and are searchable by school name, and other criteria.

This is the third year that campus crime statistics have been made centrally available to the public on the internet.

Security On Campus Helps Launch Effort To End Alcohol Advertising In Collegiate Athletics

Washington, DC-Former University of North Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith and former University of Nebraska head football coach (and current U.S. Representative) Tom Osborne (R-NE) on Wednesday, November 12th helped launch a nationwide campaign to rid televised college sports of alcohol advertising. Smith, Osborne, and the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) heading a coalition of more than 80 organizations including Security On Campus, Inc. said they would call on colleges and universities, athletic conferences, and the NCAA to stop taking money from alcohol advertisers.

"College officials say they want to deter underage and binge drinking, and stop the riots that disrupt campus communities and blot schools' reputations," said George A. Hacker, director of CSPI's alcohol policies project. "But too often, they're complicit with beer marketers in pitching beer to their students and young fans. That totally undercuts their responsibilities to the health and safety of their students."

"Colleges need to divorce themselves from alcohol industry sponsorship," said Catherine Bath, SOC's Program Director, at a Washington, DC launch of the "Alcohol-Free Sports TV" effort. "Nothing will change until the leaders of our great universities take a firm stand and refuse to send such a blatantly mixed message to their own students."
