California State Audit Finds Problems With Campus Crime Reporting

Sacramento, CA-A report released Thursday by the California Auditor's office found problems and inconsistencies with the crime statistics reported under the Jeanne Clery Act by a sample of colleges and universities across the state. The report blamed a lack of clear guidance, and other problems including inadequate record keeping practices.

Last year the California legislature adopted Chapter 804, Statutes of 2002, a bill sponsored by Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson which, among other things, requires the state's Auditor to conduct audits of six colleges and universities every three years to determine if they are complying with the Clery Act's campus security disclosure requirements. This was the first report called for by that legislation.
