West Virginia University Clery Act Review To Commence This Week
Morgantown, WV-A full U.S. Department of Education on-site review of West Virginia University's compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act's campus crime reporting requirements will commence this Monday, April 5th. Monday is also the 18th anniversary of Clery's murder at Lehigh University. Connie Clery, Jeanne's mother, said that this timing was very fitting.
A brief preliminary review, in conjunction with the state police and Federal Bureau of Investigation, was conducted last month following a complaint filed by Security On Campus, Inc. alleging that burglary, sexual assault, and shooting reports were improperly classified by campus police. This week's follow-up visit will involve a review of thousands of pages of documents, as well as interviews with campus officials. Tennessee Bill Requiring Campuses To Call Local Police On Deaths, Rapes Nears Final PassageNashville, TN-The "Robert 'Robbie' Nottingham Campus Crime Scene Investigation Act of 2004" (HB 2753, SB 2797), sponsored by Rep. Nathan Vaughn (D-Kingsport) and Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville), unanimously passed the Tennessee House of Representatives last Wednesday, March 31st. A last procedural vote is required in the Senate this week before the legislation is sent to Governor Phil Bredesen (D) for his review, and expected approval. Under the legislation, which will take effect upon becoming law, campus deaths and rapes will be jointly investigated by local and campus police. Local police will take lead on death and murder investigations, while campus police will lead rape investigations. The Nottingham family believes that foul play may have been involved in Robbie's death at East Tennessee State University a year ago, and has established a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, and conviction of anyone responsible for the possible murder. Anyone with information about Robbie's death may report it anonymously by calling 1-888-251-7959 or visiting http://www.robbienottingham.com/. University Of Virginia Mother Creates Web Site To Demand Better Response To RapeCharlottesville, VA-The mother of a campus rape survivor at the University of Virginia has established a web site, http://www.uvavictimsofrape.com/, to demand a more effective response to rape complaints, and that the University make rape a violation of the school's Honor Code. Since being established late last month, the web site has received media attention, comments from numerous victims on campus, and thousands of visitors. "The time has come for the administration to address the prevalence of sexual assault at the University," said the parent in a statement to Security On Campus. "My goal is for the students to finally raise the point to the administration that sexual assault should be an Honor Code violation and that the only acceptable sanction would be dismissal from the University."
