King Of Prussia, Penn.-Security On Campus, Inc. (SOC) last week announced the promotion of Catherine Bath to the position of Executive Director. Bath, formerly the organization's Program Director, joined the staff of the organization after her son, Raheem, died in 1999 as the result of a binge drinking incident at Duke University.

"Cathy, like our family, has taken the lessons learned from a personal tragedy and worked to save other college students from losing their lives," said Connie Clery, who co-founded SOC with her husband Howard after their only daughter Jeanne was raped and murdered at Lehigh University in 1986. "She has done an outstanding job for us, and we are very pleased to announce that she will be assuming important new responsibilities as the Executive Director of Security On Campus, Inc."

SOC also announced the appointment of Sarah Wood to the position of Program Director, formerly occupied by Bath. Wood, a graduate of Villanova University with a B.A. in Communications, will be responsible for SOC's educational programs and community outreach. More...

Congress Told That Law Stripping Federal Student Aid From Drug Convicts Must Not Be Repealed

Washington, D.C.-Efforts to repeal a law stripping federal financial aid from college students convicted of a drug offense must be opposed said Connie and Howard Clery, Security On Campus, Inc.'s co-founders. "Substance abuse on our nation's college and university campuses is an epidemic," they wrote in a letter sent last week to Congressional leaders. "It is also often a factor in even more serious crimes such as murder, rape, and aggravated assault. When taxpayers subsidize a student's drug habit, we all are paying to put other innocent students' health and safety at risk."

Instead of repealing the provision, SOC has endorsed and is supporting a provision in the College Access and Opportunity Act of 2004 (H.R. 4283) clarifying the law so that it applies only to convictions for drug offenses that occur while a student is actually receiving federal aid. "We strongly support your effort to retain and clarify this very important provision in the law," the Clerys told H.R. 4283's sponsor and Congressional Education Committee Chairman John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).

Please contact your member of Congress in Washington, D.C. to let them know that you support Congressman Boehner's effort to retain and reform this important law. Ask them to support Section 484 of H.R. 4283.
