2005 Violence Goes To College Conference

Facing the Facts: From Denial, Beyond Enabling, Toward Empowerment.

quote by Charles C ThomasCampuses continue to face headlines of alcohol-fueled rioting, sexual assault, hazing, and other violent behavior. When violence occurs in a college setting, reaction is necessarily complicated. Campus departments can find themselves interacting with parents, police departments, advocacy groups, government agencies, lawyers and media in an ever-changing mix of circumstances.

In response to the growing demand for best practices training and peer advice, Regis University, in partnership with Security On Campus, Inc., will host the second Violence Goes To College: Prevention, Interruption and Critical Incident Management Conference this May 23rd through 25th in Denver, Colorado.

The goals of this year’s event are to help build a sense of collaboration among the different disciplines and agencies involved in dealing with disasters, in their shared aim of preventing and responding to campus violence, with particular attention paid to alcohol’s role in campus violence.

The conference's primary target audience includes law enforcement, judicial affairs, human resources, counseling, residence life, risk managers, and substance abuse prevention specialists.

Connie CleryConnie Clery, the co-founder of Security On Campus, Inc., will deliver the opening keynote "The History and the Future of the Jeanne Clery Act" the first evening of the conference. The Clery Act is named in memory of Clery's daughter Jeanne who was murdered at Lehigh University in 1986. The law requires most American colleges and universities to disclose basic campus crime information, and afford sexual assault victims certain basic rights. Noted experts H. Wes Perkins, Ph.D., Eugene F. Ferraro, Jackson Katz, and John Nicoletti, Ph.D. are also scheduled speakers.
